How 2008 Headies Win Launched My Stardom – MI Abaga

Rapper MI Abaga has revealed that his breakthrough came with his win at the 2008 Headies Awards, a moment that significantly boosted his career and solidified his place in the Nigerian music scene.

Abaga, who won the ‘Best Rap Single’ award, recalled feeling overlooked on the red carpet, with people asking him to move aside for Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s photo shoot.

“I had been grinding for years, and no one really cared who I was. But in February 2008, when I was announced as the winner for ‘Best Rap Single,’ my life changed that day. I remember walking into the crowd with my manager, and as we were navigating through, Omotola came in with her security. People didn’t even know I was nominated, and kept moving us from place to place,” he said.

The award marked the beginning of a successful run, leading to hits such as ‘Safe’, ‘Talk About It’, and ‘Incredible Music’, cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s top rappers.

“I was just thinking about stardom, and two hours later, I had a gold plaque in my hand from Ayo Animashaun. After that, everyone knew MI was in the game. From then on, it was ‘Safe,’ ‘Talk About It,’ and ‘Incredible Music’,” Abaga added.

The 2008 Headies win remains a defining moment in his journey, demonstrating how recognition in the industry can transform the trajectory of emerging artists.
