Yuletide Travel: FAAN Urges Airlines to Adjust Schedules to Reduce Delays

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has directed airlines to review their flight schedules during the Yuletide season to curb delays and cancellations. The agency has also initiated weekly stakeholder meetings to ensure a smooth and comfortable passenger experience between December and January.

The Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, made the disclosure in Abuja during a retreat organized for the FAAN Governing Board and stakeholders, themed: “Future-proofing FAAN: Leadership, Modernisation and Strategic Renewal.”

Mrs. Kuku highlighted ongoing efforts to repair faulty cooling systems, address power challenges, and maintain a clean airport environment throughout the festive period. She emphasized the importance of making airports “safe, secure, and welcoming” for passengers.

“We know that delays from airlines continue to be a challenge during peak periods. We are asking airlines, in conjunction with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), to review schedules and provide timely updates where delays occur. We are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure smooth operations this holiday period,” Kuku said.

She added that FAAN has increased its frequency of facilitation meetings with ground handlers and airlines from quarterly to weekly to enhance coordination. Additionally, the agency is engaging facility managers to improve sanitation at major airports and collaborating with power distribution companies to address energy issues, particularly in Lagos.

Mrs. Kuku also noted significant progress in FAAN’s revenue performance:

  • Non-aeronautical revenue has increased by over 50%.
  • Aeronautical revenue, including landing, parking, and passenger service charges, has also grown, putting FAAN on track to meet its revenue targets and move toward becoming a self-sustaining agency.

Speaking at the retreat, FAAN Board Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, pledged board support for FAAN’s transformation into a modern, efficient, and financially sustainable institution. He urged management to focus on operational excellence, passenger experience, inter-agency coordination, and unified security systems.

Dr. Ganduje stressed the importance of infrastructure upgrades, digital adoption, staff welfare, and capacity development, noting that these are critical for aligning Nigerian airports with global best practices and ensuring long-term sustainability.
