Ibadan Airport: Double Standard Endangering Oyo Citizens

Despite claims that Ibadan Airport is unsafe for commercial operations, new evidence shows it is fully operational—but only for government officials and political elites. Aircraft have been observed landing and taking off normally, guided by ground personnel, revealing that the airport functions regularly, yet ordinary citizens are denied access.

Preferential Access Confirmed by Official Documents

  • The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency issued directives opening the airport from December 5–8, 2025, specifically for activities related to the First Lady’s ceremony.
  • The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority granted NG Eagle one-time approval for the same period, explicitly noting no technical objections to operations.

These documents demonstrate that the airport is technically safe but access is selectively restricted to VIPs.

Ordinary Citizens Left in Danger
While political elites fly safely, residents are forced to rely on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway, a route notorious for accidents, kidnappings, and robberies. This exposes a glaring inequality in the use of publicly funded infrastructure.

A Reflection on Governance
The situation highlights a troubling governance issue: public infrastructure is being used as a privilege for the few rather than a right for all. Ibadan Airport, funded and maintained by taxpayers, is currently serving a select group while ordinary Nigerians face unnecessary risks.

Critical Questions for Authorities

  • If the airport is safe for ministers and VIPs, why is it unsafe for commercial airlines?
  • Why is temporary access granted for political events but not for the general public?
  • When will the airport finally reopen for regular commercial operations?

Call for Fairness
Public infrastructure should serve the public first. Ibadan Airport must be accessible to traders, students, business travelers, families, and all residents of Oyo State. The people deserve safety, equity, and transparency.
