The Nigerian government has strongly condemned the attempted coup in the Republic of Benin on Sunday, December 7, 2025, which sought to forcibly remove President Patrice Talon and destabilize the democratically elected government.
In a statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria expressed grave concern over the attack, describing it as a direct assault on democracy and a threat to regional stability. The statement praised Beninese authorities for swiftly repelling the attempt and safeguarding the President and other state institutions.
“This act of destabilization is a direct affront to democracy, constitutional order, and the will of the Beninese people, who have consistently upheld peaceful political transitions,” the statement read.
Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with Benin, commending the courage and professionalism of the country’s security forces in defending constitutional order and ensuring the safety of President Talon.
The government emphasized that unconstitutional seizures of power—whether through mutiny, external interference, or armed takeover—are unacceptable and undermine the democratic progress West Africa has achieved.
Reiterating Nigeria’s commitments under ECOWAS and the African Union, the statement called on member states and international partners to reject actions that threaten political stability in the region.
“Nigeria remains firmly committed to democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as foundations for peace, development, and regional stability,” the statement added.
The Nigerian government also urged all political actors in Benin to remain calm, respect the rule of law, and pursue their ambitions through constitutional and peaceful means. Nigeria reaffirmed its readiness to support Benin as a brotherly partner, pledging continued cooperation to strengthen democracy and peace across West Africa.
“We stand with the Government and people of Benin to deepen democracy and ensure lasting peace and prosperity for our peoples and the entire sub-region,” the statement concluded.
