IGP Egbetokun Outlines Police Strategy Against Banditry, Other Security Threats

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has highlighted the Nigeria Police Force’s adoption of an “all-of-society” approach to tackling banditry and other security challenges across the country.

Speaking to reporters at the Lagos Police Command in Ikeja during the foundation-laying ceremony for a new multi-layered police conference centre, Egbetokun stressed that security cannot be provided in isolation. He called for synergy between security agencies and communities to effectively combat insecurity.

“Security is not something that is provided in silos. We must work together with all communities and security agencies in Nigeria. To secure this country, we must all come together, believe in ourselves, and reject fake news,” he said.

Egbetokun warned that spreading falsehoods about security agencies undermines their efforts and the nation’s overall resolve.

He also assured Nigerians that the police are preparing to ensure a safe and hitch-free festive season, with all commands instructed to implement tight security measures well ahead of the yuletide period.

The IGP praised Lagos State Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh for initiating the construction of the conference centre, describing it as a model for other commissioners.

“The foundation we are laying today is not just for a building, but for a vision — a vision of progress, professionalism, and excellent service in the Nigeria Police Force,” Egbetokun said.

He added that Lagos’ policing model has long served as a benchmark due to the city’s complexity as a megacity and its security challenges. The new facility, he noted, represents a step toward strengthening community trust, improving operational efficiency, and fostering discipline within the force.
