Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has been appointed as the Coordinator of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, a body representing traditional leaders across the South. The announcement was made during a visit to the governor’s office in Owerri by the Council’s Chairman, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, accompanied by Co-Chairman Eze Cletus Ilomuanya and Secretary Obi Benjamin Ikenchukwu Keagboruzi I.
The traditional rulers cited Uzodimma’s contributions to promoting unity among monarchs and ensuring they maintain their prominence politically, culturally, and traditionally.
“After careful evaluation of his roles, the monarchs collectively agreed that Governor Uzodimma is the most suitable to coordinate our affairs in the interest of not just Southern Nigeria, but the country as a whole,” said Oba Ogunwusi.
The chairman noted that the Technical Committee visited Owerri to discuss preparations for the council’s forthcoming general meeting in Ogun State, which will be hosted by Governor Dapo Abiodun, Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Governors’ Forum. The visit also included delivering a letter to Uzodimma seeking an audience with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Responding to the appointment, Governor Uzodimma expressed humility and pledged to discharge his duties faithfully. He reiterated the importance of the traditional institution in Nigerian society and encouraged monarchs to uphold their role as custodians of culture.
Uzodimma also promised to liaise with his Ogun State counterpart regarding the upcoming meeting and assured that the monarchs’ message to the President would be conveyed.
