Actors IK Ogbonna and Rita Dominic have addressed concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the title of Ini Edo’s latest film, A Very Dirty Christmas, which CAN described as “offensive and disrespectful” to the Christian faith.
Ogbonna, who plays the character Frankie, clarified on Instagram that the film’s title was not intended to mock Christianity. He emphasized that the cast, producer, and director are all Christians, and that the movie carries meaningful themes of love, forgiveness, and self-worth beyond its provocative title.
“I respect the Christian Association of Nigeria and understand the concerns raised,” Ogbonna wrote. “My humble appeal is that we allow the full message of the film — not just the title — to speak for itself.”
Supporting her colleague, Rita Dominic encouraged viewers to watch the movie before forming judgments. “Artists have the right to creative expression. A Very Dirty Christmas is a celebration of storytelling, emotions, and holiday fun. Watch it first before drawing conclusions,” she said.
The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has since engaged with the producers regarding a possible title modification to avoid offense.
The film is currently showing in cinemas nationwide.
