Iran Urges UN to Act Against Trump’s “Reckless” Threats Amid Nationwide Protests

Iran has formally called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to condemn what it describes as “reckless and unlawful threats” made by former US President Donald Trump amid ongoing protests across the country. The letter, sent by Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani, comes in response to Trump’s warnings that the United States is “locked and loaded” if any further protesters are harmed.

Trump’s Threats Spark Diplomatic Response

The correspondence, sent on Friday, urged the UN to unequivocally condemn Trump’s statements, labeling them a “serious violation of the UN Charter and international law.” Iravani stressed that any attempt to use internal unrest as a pretext for foreign intervention is a “gross violation” of Iran’s **sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity.”

The ambassador’s letter, published in full by the IRNA state news agency, further warned that Iran reserves its right to defend its sovereignty and will respond in a “decisive and proportionate manner” to any external interference.

“The United States of America bears full responsibility for any consequences arising from these illegal threats and any subsequent escalation of tensions,” Iravani added.

Protests Spread Across Iran Amid Economic Turmoil

Protests have intensified nationwide, with demonstrators taking to the streets in cities including Qom, Marvdasht, Yasuj, Mashhad, and Hamedan, as well as Tehran neighborhoods such as Tehranpars and Khak Sefid. The unrest began after shopkeepers in Tehran staged strikes over soaring prices and economic stagnation.

So far, at least nine people have been killed and 44 arrested in the ongoing demonstrations. In Qom, the deputy governor reported that a grenade explosion killed one person, in what authorities described as an attempt to incite further unrest.

Trump’s Comments and US-Iran Tensions

On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump warned:

“If Iran violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue.”

Iranian officials, including Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, strongly rejected the threat, claiming that US interference would cause chaos across the region and harm American interests.

The remarks come against a backdrop of heightened US-Iran tensions, including Trump’s June 2025 airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, which he described as “a very successful attack.” Recently, during a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump further threatened to “knock the hell out of Iran” should it advance its nuclear or ballistic weapons programs.

Iran’s Economic Crisis Fuels Protests

The protests are closely linked to Iran’s worsening economic situation, which includes:

  • A collapsing national currency
  • High inflation rates
  • Years of severe drought, particularly affecting Tehran’s 10 million residents

President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged government shortcomings and pledged to address the public’s grievances. Observers noted that the government’s tone was more conciliatory than in previous protest responses, signaling a potential shift toward dialogue and solutions.

UN Response Urged

Iran’s UN ambassador called for urgent action from the United Nations and the UN Security Council, emphasizing the need for the international body to uphold principles of sovereignty, non-intervention, and international law.

Iravani urged UN officials to send a strong message that external powers must not exploit domestic unrest to justify intervention or escalation.
