The announcement by Rohini Acharya, the daughter of RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav, that she is quitting politics and “disowning” her family has sent shockwaves through the political establishment in Bihar, coming just a day after the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan suffered a devastating defeat in the state assembly elections.
Leaders from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have leveraged the dramatic declaration to question the leadership and internal stability of the RJD and the Yadav family.
JD(U) Leader: Questioning Lalu and Rabri Devi
JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar focused his reaction on the personal sacrifice Rohini Acharya made for her father, using it to highlight the apparent pain behind her decision.
- The Daughter Who Saved Lalu Yadav: Neeraj Kumar specifically referenced Acharya’s act of donating a kidney to her father a few years ago, stating: “The daughter (Rohini Acharya) who saved the life of Lalu Yadav is now saying ‘in pain’ that she is quitting the party and disowning the family.”
- Questioning the Parents: He concluded by posing the question: “It is a big question on Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi?”
In a later statement, Kumar was quoted as urging the RJD chief not to act like Dhritarashtra (the blind king from the Mahabharata), implying that Lalu Yadav was ignoring a serious rift within his family and party.
BJP Leaders: Blaming Internal Feud
BJP leaders categorized the development as an unfortunate family matter but attributed the fallout to the actions of “one or two individuals.”
- Dilip Jaiswal (BJP Leader): Jaiswal, the Bihar BJP President, called the situation “unfortunate,” emphasizing the gravity of Acharya’s sacrifice: “Rohini Acharya has donated her kidney to save Lalu Yadav. The way Lalu Yadav’s family is constantly falling apart due to one or two individuals, no one will like it.” He urged Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi to intervene and save the family, stating that the breakup was “not appropriate” if caused by one individual.
- Ram Kripal Yadav (BJP Leader): He called it her “family matter,” but noted that the “feud is happening in front of everyone, and all are witnessing it.”
The Context of Rohini Acharya’s Statement
Rohini Acharya, an MBBS doctor who lives in Singapore, posted a cryptic but powerful message on X on Saturday, taking the blame for the RJD’s failure but explicitly naming two individuals close to her brother, Tejashwi Yadav:
“I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family. This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do and I’m taking all the blame.”
- Sanjay Yadav is a Rajya Sabha MP and a trusted aide of Tejashwi Yadav.
- Rameez is reported to be an old friend of Tejashwi Yadav.
Hours after the initial post, Acharya told reporters at the Patna airport that she had been “thrown out” of the family by Tejashwi Yadav and his aides, alleging she was “disgraced, abused, and even hit” when she questioned them about the party’s electoral debacle.
The internal family tensions have been visible for months, following the expulsion of her elder brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, from the party earlier in the year. Acharya’s resignation comes as the RJD struggles to explain its collapse from 75 to just 25 seats in the recently concluded assembly elections.
