Jimmy Kimmel Breaks Down in Tears Honoring Lifelong Friend and Band Leader Cleto Escobedo

November 11, 2025Jimmy Kimmel Live! was filled with emotion on Tuesday night as host Jimmy Kimmel tearfully paid tribute to his lifelong friend and the show’s house band leader, Cleto Escobedo III, who passed away at the age of 59. Escobedo led Cleto and the Cletones, the band that has provided live music for the late-night show since its premiere in 2003.

Kimmel, 57, began the episode in tears, describing the profound impact Escobedo had on his life and career:

“We’ve been on the air for almost 23 years, and I’ve had to do some hard monologues along the way, but this one’s the hardest because late last night, early this morning, we lost someone very special who was much too young.”

Lifelong Friendship and Shared Memories

Kimmel shared stories from his childhood, highlighting the deep bond he shared with Escobedo. The two friends had grown up together, maintaining a friendship that spanned decades:

“Everyone loves Cleto… everyone here at the show. We are devastated by this. It’s not… It’s just not fair.”

The heartfelt tribute revealed just how intertwined their lives had been. Kimmel emphasized their closeness, recalling summers spent at Escobedo’s home and reflecting on the musician’s profound influence both personally and professionally.

Impact on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Episodes

Due to the emotional toll, Kimmel announced that the Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be canceled. He explained that the Nov. 11 show went ahead because Escobedo would have wanted it to, especially as comedian Eddie Murphy was scheduled as a guest.

Escobedo’s father, Cleto Escobedo Sr., also performed on stage that night, playing tenor and alto saxophones alongside the band. Escobedo’s mother was present in the audience, honoring her son’s legacy.

A Musical Legacy

Escobedo III had a rich musical history before joining Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2003. According to Kimmel, Escobedo had previously toured with Earth, Wind & Fire, Paula Abdul, and had his own record deal. His musical talent and charisma made him an invaluable member of the show:

“Of course, I wanted great musicians, but I wanted somebody I had chemistry with. And there’s nobody in my life I have better chemistry with than him,” Kimmel said.

Escobedo’s early influence came from his father, a dedicated musician who gave up touring to focus on family, inspiring Escobedo’s lifelong commitment to music.

A Heartbreaking Loss

Kimmel also shared the news on Instagram, describing Escobedo as:

“A great friend, father, son, musician and man. Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was nine years old. Cherish your friends and please keep Cleto’s wife, children, and parents in your prayers.”

Escobedo’s passing marks a significant loss for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! family, the world of late-night television, and the music community that cherished his contributions.
