Karan Johar Opens Up About Loneliness Despite National Award Win: ‘No Plus One, Wanted to Feel Happy’

Mumbai: Filmmaker Karan Johar, known for his larger-than-life personality and blockbuster films, recently opened up about feeling lonely despite his professional highs. In a candid conversation with Sania Mirza on her podcast Serving It Up with Sania, Karan spoke about his experiences as a single parent and how life’s achievements can sometimes feel isolating without a partner.

Feeling Alone Amid Achievements

Karan, who is a single parent to twins Yash and Roohi, revealed that even in moments of great personal achievement, he has felt a profound sense of loneliness. Recalling the time he received the National Award for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in the category of Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, he said:

“I remember I got a call that I was getting a National Award. I hung up the call, and for one minute all I thought about was, ‘What do I do tonight? Whose house do I go to? Whose hand do I hold? A little pat on the back, I needed and wanted to feel happy.’”

At the awards ceremony, he noted, he had no plus one, while most attendees came with their partners. His mother was unwell and unable to travel, and his children were too young to accompany him, which made the moment particularly poignant.

Single Life: Highs and Lows

Karan emphasized that loneliness hits hardest in life’s highs rather than lows. While he has close family, friends, and supportive cousins, he admits that celebratory occasions—like awards, parties, or New Year’s celebrations—can magnify the absence of a romantic partner.

“I do get lonely, and on many nights when I am eating alone, I don’t go to my dining table. I eat in my room so I can dilute the loneliness… But they say never say never, and when it happens, I am standing with my arms wide open like Shah Rukh Khan.”

He humorously added that he prefers not to accompany couples during celebrations and jokingly confessed that PDA at events makes him want to “kill” those involved.

Upcoming Projects

Apart from reflecting on his personal life, Karan is focused on his upcoming films, including the romantic drama Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, set to release on 25 December. He also has Chand Mera Dil and Nagzilla in the pipeline.

Karan’s openness about loneliness and single parenthood resonates with many, showing that even amidst fame and success, human emotions and the need for companionship remain universal.
