Karnataka Launches Treasure Hunt After Gold Ornaments Unearthed in Lakkundi Village

Gadag | Jan 16, 2026

The Karnataka government has launched a treasure hunt in the historic village of Lakkundi, Gadag district, following the discovery of gold ornaments during the construction of a house in the area. Known for its rich architectural heritage, Lakkundi has long been associated with dynasties such as the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Kalchuris, and Vijayanagara kings, as well as the famed philanthropist Danachintamani Attimabbe.

The excavation will take place on the premises of the Kote Veerabhadreshwara Temple, with a 10 metres by 10 metres area already demarcated for the work. The operation is being jointly conducted by the Department of Tourism, the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, the Lakkundi Heritage Development Authority, and the district administration. Heavy machinery, including JCBs, trucks, and tractors, has been mobilized, and a team of 15 women and five men has been assigned to the site.

The treasure hunt was prompted by the accidental discovery of a small copper pot containing gold ornaments weighing 470 grams by a local boy. The items, estimated to be 300–400 years old, were handed over to the district administration, and the boy was felicitated for his honesty.

Archaeological sources suggest that Lakkundi may still be rich in buried valuables, including gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, rubies, corals, and cat’s-eye stones. The region was historically prosperous and even served as a site for ancient gold coin minting, making it a potential treasure trove for researchers and historians.

Previous explorations in November 2024 had already unearthed thousands of ancient artefacts, heightening interest in the village. The latest discovery of jewellery has further intensified archaeological activity, with reports of precious stones such as sapphires, pearls, gems, diamonds, and cat’s-eye still being found in various parts of Lakkundi.

Archaeologists described the current excavation as being of high historical significance, with the potential to uncover inscriptions, monuments, sculptures, and ornaments linked to Karnataka’s medieval history. Officials believe the findings could substantially enhance understanding of Lakkundi’s rich cultural and material heritage, shedding light on centuries of dynastic influence and local prosperity.
