In response to the recent abduction of 25 female students from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, the Kebbi State Government has taken decisive steps to enhance security around secondary schools to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Governor’s Assurance on School Security
Governor Nasir Idris has reassured parents and guardians that the state government is actively working to strengthen security protocols in all post-primary schools across Kebbi. He announced that his administration has begun consultations with security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, educationists, and security consultants to review and reinforce security measures in schools.
Consultations and Measures
The governor, represented by his deputy, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, made these remarks during the 2025 Kebbi State Qur’anic Recitation closing ceremony. He urged parents to remain calm while these consultations are ongoing, ensuring them that necessary steps are being taken to prevent such abductions from happening again.
School Closure for Security Review
Governor Idris emphasized that schools in the state would not reopen until security assessments have been completed and security measures are deemed sufficient to safeguard the students. This cautious approach aims to ensure that the appropriate security frameworks are in place before students return to school.
State and Federal Collaboration
In his statement, the governor described the Maga abduction as a deeply disturbing incident and reiterated his commitment to securing educational institutions in Kebbi. He highlighted that both state and federal authorities are working together to address the broader issue of insecurity, with the hope that improved coordination among security agencies will contribute to reducing banditry and other criminal activities.
Next Steps
The Kebbi State government is committed to concluding the necessary security assessments and will allow schools to resume only once these measures are validated and approved. The focus is on creating a safer environment for educational activities, with special attention to the vulnerabilities posed by recent security breaches.
