Lagos Slashes Cost of Replacing Faded Number Plates to N20,000

The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary reduction in the cost of replacing faded or damaged vehicle number plates from N30,000 to N20,000. The three-month amnesty and rebate window will run from January to March 2026.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the initiative, which targets both private and commercial vehicle owners. The scheme aims to improve vehicle identification, strengthen state security, and enhance road safety.

The Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Rasheed Muri-Okunola, explained that the rebate is a citizen-focused intervention encouraging motorists to voluntarily replace worn or illegible number plates at a reduced cost.

Muri-Okunola emphasized that clear vehicle plates are crucial for traffic enforcement, crime prevention, and effective monitoring, noting that faded or unreadable plates hinder investigations and the identification of vehicles involved in criminal activities.
