Larne FC sent a strong message to the Irish Premiership title race with a commanding 3-0 victory over second-placed Coleraine at Inver Park, extending their lead at the top of the table to seven points. The win demonstrates Larne’s intent to claim their third league title in four seasons.
Andy Ryan Stars on Return from Injury
The game’s decisive moment came after substitute Andy Ryan, returning from a lengthy knee injury, scored twice in a 10-minute spell shortly after coming on in the second half. Former Hamilton striker Ryan opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 74th minute after Levi Ives fouled Tiarnan O’Connor in the box.
Ryan doubled his tally minutes later, capitalizing on a long ball from Matt Ridley that ricocheted off Lewis McGregor, slotting a composed low shot past Coleraine goalkeeper Aidan Harris.
Substitute Paul O’Neill completed the scoring five minutes from time, heading home a precise cross from Jordan McEneff, sealing a comprehensive win for the Inver Reds.
Coleraine’s Early Chances
Coleraine started strongly, with new signing Ben Wylie, on his debut after moving from Portadown, nearly scoring inside the opening two minutes. Wylie’s effort failed to test Rohan Ferguson, Larne’s goalkeeper, as the shot rolled harmlessly through to him.
Joel Cooper also had a strong chance on seven minutes, striking a fierce shot from the edge of the penalty area, only for Ferguson to make a solid save. Wylie followed up but could only direct the rebound over the bar.
Larne responded with threatening attacks, including a near miss from Matty Lusty, who spotted Harris off his line and attempted a chip that went narrowly wide. Lusty later connected with a low cross from Jordan McEneff but again failed to find the target.
Larne Dominate Second Half
After a fast-paced first half with chances at both ends, Larne dominated the second half. Tiarnan O’Connor nearly opened the scoring with a low drive that Harris had to tip wide, but it was Ryan who broke the deadlock for Larne.
The Inver Reds’ attacking prowess was evident throughout, with McEneff’s precise crosses and Lusty’s intelligent movement creating multiple opportunities. Larne’s combination of pace, width, and composure in front of goal proved too much for Coleraine on the night.
Implications for the Irish Premiership Title Race
The win gives Larne a seven-point cushion over Coleraine, strengthening their position at the top of the Irish Premiership. With only half a season remaining, Larne are well-positioned to defend their title and continue their dominance in Northern Ireland’s top-flight league.
Andy Ryan’s return from injury provides a timely boost to Larne’s attacking options, while the contributions of substitutes like Paul O’Neill show the squad depth Larne can rely on during the run-in.
