Livia Giuggioli Firth Explains Why She Still Uses Colin Firth’s Last Name Six Years After Divorce

Livia Giuggioli Firth Clarifies Why She Keeps Colin Firth’s Surname

Italian environmental activist and filmmaker Livia Giuggioli Firth is setting the record straight about why she continues to use her ex-husband Colin Firth’s last name on social media—six years after their divorce.

The 56-year-old former wife of the Oscar-winning actor took to Instagram on October 27, 2025, to address persistent questions from followers asking why she hasn’t dropped the “Firth” name from her handle.

“People keep asking me this question in an accusatory way,” she said in a candid video. “The simple reason is that Instagram hasn’t let me change it.”

According to Livia, despite multiple attempts to update her verified profile, Meta’s approval process for changing blue-check handles has left her stuck with @liviafirth.

“When you are verified, you have to be authorized to change your name,” she explained. “I’ve asked Instagram many times—wrote to people at Meta—and nobody replied.”

Proud of Both Names — “I’m a Firth Mama”

Beyond the technical hurdles, Livia expressed her pride in both her Italian heritage and her connection to the Firth family.

“Giuggioli has always been my name. I never changed it—Italian women don’t,” she shared. “And I’m incredibly proud of being Giuggioli and incredibly proud of being Firth. I’m a Firth mama, my boys are Firth, and that part will never go away.”

Livia and Colin share two sons together — Luca, 24, and Matteo, 22 — both of whom carry the Firth surname.

Her statement resonated with fans, who applauded her for gracefully embracing her dual identity as both an independent woman and a mother still connected to the family name that became part of her public persona.

A Look Back at Colin and Livia Firth’s Marriage

The couple first met in the mid-1990s while working on the British-Italian miniseries Nostromo, where Livia served as a production assistant. They married in 1997, building a life together that spanned over two decades and several continents.

However, their marriage faced turbulence when Livia admitted to a brief affair with Italian journalist Marco Brancaccia during a private separation between 2015 and 2016. The situation became highly publicized when she later accused Brancaccia of stalking her after their relationship ended.

Livia and Colin reunited for a time but officially divorced in 2019, following years of public scrutiny and legal drama surrounding the affair and subsequent civil case—which was settled out of court in 2018.

Despite their separation, both have spoken respectfully of one another in interviews. They continue to co-parent their two sons and maintain what insiders describe as an “amicable, family-oriented relationship.”

“It’s Just a Name — And I Don’t Care”

In her Instagram video, Livia emphasized that she’s not losing sleep over the issue.

“So it’s very, very simple. My hashtag is still @liviafirth because Meta isn’t allowing me to change it,” she said. “And honestly, I really don’t care. The people who love me don’t care whether it’s Giuggioli, Firth, or another name.”

She closed her video with a pointed reminder about perspective:

“With everything going on in the world, is that really a problem?”

Her words reflect the same poise and social consciousness that have defined her career as a sustainability advocate and creative director of Eco-Age, a company focused on ethical fashion and environmental change.

Livia’s Post-Divorce Life

Since her split from the King’s Speech actor, Livia has continued to thrive professionally. She remains a leading voice in sustainable fashion, having championed initiatives such as the Green Carpet Challenge—which encourages celebrities to wear eco-friendly designs on red carpets.

She frequently speaks at global events on environmental issues, women’s empowerment, and responsible business practices, balancing her activism with motherhood and a private life away from the Hollywood spotlight.

Meanwhile, Colin Firth, 65, has continued his successful acting career, appearing in acclaimed projects such as Empire of Light (2022) and Lockerbie: A Search for Truth (2024).
