McLaren Prepared to Implement Team Orders to Support Lando Norris at Abu Dhabi GP

McLaren has confirmed that it is ready to use team orders at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix if required to support Lando Norris’ title bid, with teammate Oscar Piastri potentially playing a key role in helping the Briton secure the Drivers’ Championship.

Norris Holds Narrow Lead Over Piastri

Entering the final race of the season at Yas Marina Circuit, Norris leads Piastri by 16 points, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull 12 points behind the British driver. McLaren has maintained a philosophy of open competition between their drivers throughout the season, allowing both Norris and Piastri a fair chance at their first Formula 1 championship.

However, team principal Zak Brown emphasized that the team would act strategically if the situation arises where only one McLaren driver has a realistic shot at the title.

“As long as both drivers have the chance to win the title, then it’s business as usual and they’re free to race,” Brown told reporters.
“If as the race plays out, it becomes clear that both can’t, we will do what we can to make sure the team wins the drivers’ championship.”

Possible Scenarios for Team Orders

There are several scenarios in which Piastri could be asked to cede positions to Norris to maximize McLaren’s chances against Verstappen:

  • If Verstappen is leading, Piastri is in the top three, and Norris is fourth, McLaren may instruct Piastri to give up a position so Norris can secure the championship.
  • In another scenario, if Norris is eighth, Verstappen second, and Piastri is in between them, position adjustments could be necessary to prevent Verstappen from overtaking Norris in the standings.

Brown added that Piastri would comply if called upon:
“Our drivers have always complied with team wishes just as we comply with their wishes. I have no doubt either of our drivers will continue to race brilliantly in the best interests of the team.”

Drivers’ Perspectives

Norris stated he would not personally ask Piastri to give up positions, saying:
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a fair question.”

The McLaren pair have combined to earn 800 points in the Constructors’ Championship this season, highlighting the team’s consistent performance. Both drivers have proven capable of racing aggressively while respecting team strategy, making McLaren a formidable contender heading into the season finale.

With the championship on the line, all eyes will be on Yas Marina, as Norris, Piastri, and Verstappen battle for one of the closest title-deciding races of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
