Owen’s Longstanding Career with Mercedes

John Owen, the long-serving Mercedes Formula 1 chief designer, has announced that he will leave the team later in 2026. Owen, 52, has been an integral part of the Brackley-based team through its various iterations—Honda, Brawn GP, and Mercedes—since joining in 2007.

During his tenure, Owen played a pivotal role in the team’s success, contributing to championship victories under Brawn GP in 2009 and Mercedes from 2010 onwards. His work helped the team secure seven drivers’ and eight constructors’ titles between 2014 and 2021, cementing Mercedes’ dominance in modern Formula 1.

Transition Plans and Mercedes Statement

Mercedes released a statement confirming Owen’s departure, saying he would leave the team “after assuring the transition to his successor”. He will then serve a period of gardening leave. No details have been provided regarding his next career move.

The statement also outlined Mercedes’ internal restructuring: Engineering Director Giacomo Tortora will take over as Director of Car Design, a role that falls under the supervision of Deputy Technical Director Simone Resta.

He started at the now-defunct Reynard Racing Cars, gaining foundational experience in race car design. Later, he moved to the Swiss Sauber F1 team, where he became Senior Aerodynamicist in 2004, showcasing his expertise in high-performance vehicle aerodynamics.

Owen’s move to Honda F1 in 2007 marked the beginning of his long association with the Brackley team. His leadership in design was instrumental during Brawn GP’s shock 2009 championship win and Mercedes’ dominance in the turbo-hybrid era.
