Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has publicly criticised the club, claiming he has been “thrown under the bus” and unfairly blamed for the team’s difficult start to the Premier League season. The Egyptian forward’s explosive comments came after he was left on the bench during Liverpool’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Leeds United on Saturday — a match that may signal the beginning of the end of his time at Anfield.
Salah Feels Scapegoated for Liverpool’s Poor Form
Speaking to reporters after the match at Elland Road, the 33-year-old expressed deep frustration with the club’s leadership and manager Arne Slot.
“I’m very, very disappointed,” Salah said. “I’ve done so much for this club over the years. I don’t know — it seems like the club is throwing me under the bus. I feel like someone wants me to take all the blame.”
Salah also said he had been given “a lot of promises” during the summer that the club has not fulfilled, adding to his sense of betrayal.
Club Legend Left on the Bench
Despite being one of Liverpool’s most iconic players — scoring 250 goals and winning multiple Premier League titles — Salah has been benched for the last three matches, playing only 45 minutes across all three fixtures.
Slot defended his decision, saying the game situation required “different players” and more control rather than goal scoring, which he said is when Salah is usually brought on. However, the explanation did little to ease speculation of a complete breakdown in the relationship between the manager and the club’s all-time great.
“I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t,” Salah said. “It seems someone doesn’t want me at the club.”
Hints of an Imminent Goodbye
Salah revealed he has already told his parents to attend Liverpool’s upcoming match against Brighton, suggesting it could be his final appearance at Anfield before leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations on December 15.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said. “I just want to be at Anfield and say goodbye to the fans. When I go to the Africa Cup of Nations, I don’t know what the situation will be after.”
Liverpool face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, followed by Brighton at home — two fixtures that could determine Salah’s future at the club.
A Difficult Season After a Record-Breaking Campaign
Last season, Salah delivered one of the best performances of his career, scoring 34 goals and providing 18 assists as Liverpool lifted the Premier League title. But this season has been far more challenging, with the team struggling and Salah managing just five goals and three assists in 19 appearances.
His dip in form, however, has not stopped him from insisting that he has earned his place.
“I’ve done so much for this club with the respect I want to get,” he said. “I shouldn’t have to fight every day for my position — I’ve earned it.”
A Legend Considering His Future
Since arriving from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has become Liverpool’s third-highest scorer in history, behind only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. His potential departure would mark one of the biggest shifts in the club’s modern era.
But after weeks on the bench, growing internal tensions, and a public accusation of being treated unfairly, Salah’s future at Liverpool has never looked more uncertain.
