Naomi Girma Returns from Injury, Set for First Chelsea Appearance of the Season in WSL Clash with London City Lionesses

Chelsea FC Women are set to receive a major defensive boost this weekend as American international Naomi Girma returns to the matchday squad for the first time this season. Head coach Sonia Bompastor confirmed the news during her Friday press conference ahead of the team’s Women’s Super League (WSL) meeting with London City Lionesses at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

🩺 Girma’s Return: Key Strength for Chelsea’s Backline

The 25-year-old centre-back, who joined Chelsea in January for a reported $1.1 million, suffered a calf injury during training in September, just before Chelsea’s season opener against Manchester City. Since then, Girma has yet to make a competitive appearance for the reigning WSL champions.

Her absence was also felt at international level as she missed out on the recent U.S. Women’s National Team friendlies against Portugal and New Zealand. This marks the third time in 2025 she has been unavailable for national team selection due to injury.

However, her recovery is now complete, and Girma is expected to feature on the bench, giving Chelsea an important defensive option as they look to extend their unbeaten run in the league.

🚑 Injury Update: Lauren James Suffers Minor Setback

The news isn’t entirely positive for Chelsea, though. Forward Lauren James, who was initially scheduled to return alongside Girma, has experienced a minor setback in her recovery from an ankle injury. James, 24, has not played for Chelsea since sustaining the injury while representing England during their victorious 2025 UEFA Women’s European Championship campaign.

Coach Bompastor expressed caution, stating that more time will be needed before James can make her season debut.

“Lauren had a slight setback this week. We will give her the time she needs to return fully fit,” Bompastor said.

🔝 Chelsea’s Perfect Start Under Threat?

Chelsea currently sit top of the WSL table, having secured five wins and one draw in their first six matches of the 2025/26 season. They lead a tight pack—just one point ahead of both Manchester City and Manchester United.

Saturday’s opponents, London City Lionesses, have had a solid start to life in the top flight after gaining promotion from WSL2 last season. They sit 6th in the table, seven points below Chelsea and eager to make a statement in one of the toughest fixtures in their campaign.

🏟️ What to Expect at Stamford Bridge

With Girma likely to return to competitive action and Chelsea defending their unbeaten run, this weekend’s fixture promises to be an important test for Bompastor’s side. Fans will also be hoping this marks the beginning of a successful run of form for the U.S. star as the Blues compete on all fronts domestically and in Europe.
