Four unions representing aviation sector workers have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the management of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, over what they described as the institution’s failure to review staff conditions of service.
The unions warned that if the management does not conclude the review within the stipulated timeframe, they would have no choice but to direct members to withdraw their services, potentially halting operations at the college.
The ultimatum was jointly signed by:
- Olayinka Abioye, General Secretary, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE)
- Frances Akinjole, General Secretary, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN)
- AbdulRasaq Saidu, Secretary General, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP)
- Waheed Sikiru, General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE)
The statement expressed “grave concern and indignation” over management’s “continued indecision and unseriousness” regarding staff welfare and industrial harmony. The unions noted that, despite repeated engagements with management, NCAT remains the only agency in the sector yet to conclude the review of its staff conditions of service.
The unions concluded: “If the management fails to conclude this review within 14 days from now, our unions shall have no alternative than to direct our members to withdraw their services forthwith.”
NCAT, regarded as a critical centre of aviation training in Nigeria, could face significant disruption if the unions’ threat is implemented, highlighting mounting tension between staff and management over employment conditions.
