The Netherlands moved a step closer to securing their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Poland in Warsaw on Friday. The result keeps Ronald Koeman’s side three points clear at the top of Group G, with a commanding 13-goal advantage in goal difference over the Poles heading into the final round of qualifiers on Monday.
Poland Strike First
Poland appeared to take control early when Robert Lewandowski orchestrated a precise assist for Jakub Kaminski, who slotted the ball through goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s legs to put the hosts ahead. The goal highlighted Lewandowski’s continued influence in international football as he looks to lead Poland into the World Cup finals.
Netherlands Fight Back
The Dutch response came early in the second half. Donyell Malen headed a powerful attempt that was saved, only for the rebound to fall to Memphis Depay, who calmly finished to equalize. The 31-year-old Corinthians forward now has eight goals in these qualifying matches, trailing only Erling Haaland of Norway, who leads with 14.
Koeman praised his team’s resilience: “We knew Poland would come out strong, but our players showed composure and took advantage of our chances. Memphis’ goal was a perfect example of persistence paying off.”
Path to Qualification
The Netherlands now require just one point at home against Lithuania to guarantee direct qualification to the 2026 World Cup. Even in the unlikely event of a Dutch defeat, Poland would need a remarkable 13-goal swing in their final fixture against Malta to overtake the Dutch.
Elsewhere in Group G, Finland’s 1-0 loss to Malta effectively ended their play-off hopes, leaving the Netherlands and Poland to contest the top spots.
With the Dutch team boasting a potent mix of experience and emerging talent, their focus is now on securing the point needed against Lithuania to confirm their place in North America for next summer’s tournament.
