Nigeria Achieves Historic Power Grid Synchronisation with West Africa

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), in collaboration with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) Information and Coordination Centre, has successfully synchronised Nigeria’s electricity grid with the broader West African power network.

Key details:

  • The synchronisation test was conducted on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 5:04 a.m. to 9:04 a.m.
  • The exercise connected the Nigerian grid—including Niger Republic and parts of Benin and Togo—to the regional West African grid at a unified operating frequency.
  • This milestone is a major step toward regional electricity market integration and the creation of a single, interconnected power pool for energy sharing across West Africa.
  • NISO highlighted that the achievement demonstrates Nigeria’s technical competence, aligns with international standards, and reinforces the country’s strategic leadership in regional energy security and economic cooperation.

The breakthrough positions Nigeria at the center of West African energy collaboration and strengthens prospects for efficient electricity distribution across the region.
