Nigerian Police Detain Anthony Joshua’s Driver Over Fatal Accident That Killed Two Friends

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the detention of the driver who conveyed former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a vehicle involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two of his associates.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said:
“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing.”

The arrest is part of broader efforts by authorities to determine the full cause of the crash and establish culpability. The identity of the driver has not yet been disclosed.

Joshua, who was discharged from hospital on Wednesday following the December 29, 2025 accident, lost two close friends in the crash: Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele. A joint statement from the Lagos and Ogun state governments noted that Joshua remains “heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends.”

Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday to pay their final respects before the bodies were prepared for repatriation.

The Lagos and Ogun state governments expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, saying:
“We pray The Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss.”

They also commended the public and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support and praised medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professional care.
