The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, stressing that no court has ever restrained the Force from carrying out the law.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police explained that the previous suspension was voluntary, aimed at giving motorists sufficient time to regularise documentation and complete the permit process without pressure.
“The temporary suspension was in the interest of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience,” the statement read.
However, the NPF cited a rising wave of criminal activities involving vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes. The Force argued that some individuals and organised groups exploit the lack of enforcement to conceal their identities and commit offences.
“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities,” the statement added.
The resumption of tinted glass permit enforcement is scheduled to begin on January 2, 2026. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, assured the public that the enforcement will be conducted with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and strict adherence to the law.
The NPF also urged motorists to obtain tinted glass permits through approved channels to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
Enforcement of tinted glass regulations has historically sparked debate, with concerns over alleged harassment, extortion, and inconsistent implementation by security personnel. In response, the police introduced digital and centralised permit application processes to improve transparency and accessibility.
The Force stated that the renewed enforcement aims to balance citizens’ convenience with the urgent need to mitigate security risks linked to unauthorised tinted vehicles.
