The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a 50% discount on train fares nationwide, starting Tuesday, December 23, 2025, to Sunday, January 4, 2025, in celebration of Christmas and the New Year.
In a press statement issued in Lagos, the NRC revealed that a large number of passengers showed up at major stations along the Lagos–Ibadan and Abuja–Kaduna standard gauge corridors, as well as key narrow gauge routes, to take advantage of the discounted fares. The discount is expected to make traveling during the festive period more affordable for Nigerians.
Several train services operated at near full capacity on the first day, with early bookings indicating a strong public response to the fare reduction. Passengers have expressed their gratitude for the timely initiative, especially families and groups traveling to reunite with loved ones during the holiday season.
The fare reduction, which is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to make travel more affordable, promote inclusive mobility, and encourage rail transport as a safer, more reliable option during peak travel periods.
Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director and CEO of the NRC, assured passengers that the corporation is fully prepared to provide safe, efficient, and customer-focused services throughout the Yuletide period. He also emphasized that both standard and narrow gauge services are operational, with enhanced security, safety, and customer service measures in place at stations and on trains to accommodate the expected increase in passenger traffic.
Passengers using standard gauge services are advised to book tickets online through NRC-approved platforms, while tickets for narrow gauge services can be purchased directly at railway stations.
The NRC is urging all passengers to cooperate with railway officials and adhere to travel guidelines to ensure smooth and enjoyable journeys during the festive discount period.
