Six Suspects Remanded in Lagos Over Alleged Attack on LASTMA Officers

The Lagos State Mobile Court has remanded six individuals in custody over their alleged involvement in a violent attack on officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) during an enforcement operation along Airport Road. The suspects were among seven people arraigned on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, on charges of violent conduct and obstructing lawful duties.

A statement released on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, by Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, confirmed that six of the defendants were remanded in custody, while one, who pleaded not guilty, was granted bail. The case has been adjourned until February 19, 2026, for further proceedings.

The attack occurred during a late-night operation led by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in collaboration with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Corps, the Lagos State Task Force, and LASTMA field officers. The operation, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, December 23, was initiated in response to multiple complaints from the Nigerian Airport Authority (NPA).

The NPA had raised concerns about the ongoing illegal occupation of its facilities by criminal syndicates and defiant commercial bus operators along the airport corridor. These unlawful activities were reportedly creating a serious public nuisance, with recurring incidents of harassment, intimidation, and theft from unsuspecting members of the public.

During the enforcement exercise, five officers from the joint task force were attacked with dangerous weapons, and one of LASTMA’s tow trucks was deliberately set on fire. These actions were seen as a desperate attempt by the attackers to disrupt the operation and challenge the authority of the state.

Despite the violence, Taofiq stated that the enforcement team responded with professionalism and restraint. A total of 56 vehicles were impounded during the operation, including 44 commercial buses, five private cars, and seven trucks, all for various traffic and environmental violations.

Speaking after the incident, Bakare-Oki reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and maintaining law and order across the city. He warned that the state would not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness and would ensure that all offenders face the full consequences of their actions.
