Former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has confirmed his intention to return to boxing in 2026, but no official deal has been finalized regarding opponents, dates, or financial backing, BBC Sport understands.
Fury Confirms Comeback, But Details Are Unclear
The 37-year-old Briton, who last fought in December 2024, losing a rematch to Oleksandr Usyk, had previously announced his retirement a month later. In a social media post on Sunday, Fury told fans:
“2026 is that year. Been away for a while but I’m back now.”
While the Instagram announcement generated excitement among boxing fans, sources close to Fury caution that the post was premature. Key details surrounding the comeback—including his opponent, fight location, and timetable—are still under discussion.
Potential Opponents: Joshua, Makhmudov, or Wardley
A highly anticipated bout with Anthony Joshua has long been discussed but faces multiple hurdles. Joshua’s recent car crash in Nigeria, which tragically claimed the lives of two close friends, has left his immediate future uncertain. Even if he returns, the match would require significant financial backing and logistical support.
Fury’s camp has also been linked to a potential fight against Russian heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov, while another route to a world-title bout could see Fury face Fabio Wardley, the current WBO champion and fellow Queensberry stable fighter.
Fury has expressed a desire to avenge his defeats by Oleksandr Usyk, but a trilogy fight appears less likely given limited fan appetite and Usyk’s preference to defend his belts against Deontay Wilder.
Saudi Arabia’s Role in Heavyweight Boxing
Saudi Arabia has been a major force in recent heavyweight boxing events, with both Fury and Joshua previously participating in Riyadh Season-backed cards. Former Saudi powerbroker Turki Alalshikh had been linked with plans for Fury and Joshua to take separate bouts early in 2026 before a potential showdown later in the year.
However, Alalshikh has recently shifted focus to a new venture in collaboration with UFC president Dana White under the Zuffa Boxing banner, leaving the scale of Saudi involvement in future boxing events uncertain. Without that financial backing, a Fury–Joshua fight remains difficult to secure.
Fury’s 2026 Comeback Outlook
While excitement builds among fans, Fury’s return depends on multiple factors:
- Securing financial backing for major heavyweight events
- Agreement on opponents and fight dates
- Recovery and readiness of potential rivals, including Anthony Joshua
Should the pieces fall into place, Fury could return to the ring later this year, potentially against Makhmudov, Wardley, or another high-profile opponent.
