
Nollywood has mourned the loss of special effects artist James Akaie, who tragically died following an explosion on a movie set in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The incident, reported by the production team of RockBottom Flix, occurred while Akaie was experimenting with an unauthorised pyrotechnic simulation involving a gas cylinder alongside two assistants. He sustained severe injuries and later died at the hospital. His assistants suffered fire burns but are receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Film producer and director James Abinibi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing Akaie as a brilliant and passionate artist whose work inspired everyone on set.
“It is with profound sorrow that we confirm a tragic accident occurred during filming, resulting in the death of our esteemed colleague and friend, James Akaie,” Abinibi said. “Investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances, and our team is fully cooperating with authorities.”
Akaie was celebrated for his creativity and dedication in the Nigerian film industry, contributing his skills to movies such as “Mai Martaba,” “The Night of June 7th,” “Dark October,” and “Ireke.”
The production team requested privacy for Akaie’s family and colleagues as they grieve his loss, remembering him for both his exceptional talent and the vibrant energy he brought to every project.
