The Organic Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (OFPSAN) has called on the Federal Government to maintain its exclusive control over fertiliser raw material imports, warning that loosening the policy could lead to price instability, market abuse, and an influx of substandard products.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, OFPSAN President Alhaji Adams Musa said the policy is crucial for protecting local producers and ensuring a stable, credible fertiliser market.
“This measure is indispensable for preventing market abuse, curbing the influx of substandard materials, stabilising prices, ensuring consistent input availability, and shielding local producers from distortions caused by uncontrolled importation,” he stated.
Musa emphasized that sustaining stakeholder engagement, consistent policies, improved financing access, and stronger regulatory enforcement would further strengthen Nigeria’s fertiliser sector and agricultural productivity.
He lauded the Federal Government’s investment in local fertiliser production, particularly through the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), noting that it has revived dormant blending plants, stabilized prices, created jobs, and reduced reliance on imported finished fertiliser.
“In light of these achievements, we respectfully call on the Federal Government to sustain, deepen, and further consolidate the PFI. This programme is vital to Nigeria’s agricultural transformation and long-term food security,” Musa said.
The association also commended recent government inspections of blending plants, describing them as evidence of accountability and efficiency in the sector. Musa acknowledged the role of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFI) in supporting the initiative’s sustainability.
Highlighting evolving global agricultural standards, Musa stressed the importance of organic fertiliser for soil regeneration, climate resilience, environmental protection, improved crop quality, and long-term sustainability. He noted that organic fertilisers provide smallholder farmers with safer, more natural soil-enhancing options, benefiting human health and the environment.
He concluded by reaffirming OFPSAN’s readiness to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, regulatory agencies, and private-sector partners to advance the PFI’s goals and ensure farmers nationwide have access to affordable, high-quality, and sustainable fertiliser inputs.
