Outrage as Korra Obidi Twerks at Fela’s Grave

Nigerian dancer Korra Obidi has sparked widespread controversy online after visiting the gravesite of Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and celebrating the moment with a lively dance tribute—including an energetic twerk performance.

Korra shared on Instagram that she recently made the visit to Fela’s resting place. According to her, the dance was her personal way of honouring the legendary musician, whom she described as someone who admired expressive, bold women and high-energy movement. She explained that the playful performance was meant to reflect Fela’s vibrant spirit and enduring influence.

Korra also noted that Seun Kuti appreciated her tribute during the visit, saying it resonated with the lifestyle and cultural flair that defined Fela’s legacy.

However, her gesture has stirred mixed reactions across social media. While some praised the creativity behind the tribute, many Nigerians expressed outrage, arguing that twerking at a gravesite—especially that of a national music icon—was inappropriate.

Korra, unfazed by the criticism, further explained her intentions:
“We all know Fela loved a woman with gyrating hips, so I decided to pay Baba a homage. I shook my nyash for Baba. Seun was very happy. He said, ‘You people know what Baba likes but you’ve never given him.’ Baba, this is a little twerk for you. Your legacy lives on. We love you.”
