The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has announced the cancellation of its December 2 governorship primary, citing deepening internal crises and uncertainty over Governor Ademola Adeleke’s willingness to contest for the 2026 ticket under the party.
Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo on Monday, the Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, said the party’s national leadership crisis had made it impossible to proceed with the primary as scheduled. He also revealed that the turmoil had raised doubts about Adeleke’s interest in seeking the PDP nomination.
“Due to the internal crisis rocking the national leadership of our party, information at my disposal indicates that Governor Ademola Adeleke may no longer be interested in seeking the nomination of the PDP for the 2026 Osun governorship election, unless a resolution recognised by INEC is reached within the INEC timeline,” Bisi said.
He noted that Adeleke’s position could still change—but only if the party resolves its national dispute in a way that aligns with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) requirements and timetable.
According to Bisi, Adeleke had already completed all preliminary procedures for the nomination process. He purchased and submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms between October 13 and 25, 2025, met the submission deadline, appeared before the screening committee on October 30, and was cleared without any issues.
However, Bisi explained that shortly after these steps were completed, the crisis within the PDP’s national leadership escalated.
“The suspension and counter-suspension of key national officers—who are statutorily central to conducting congresses, primaries, and transmitting our candidate’s name to INEC—created a level of uncertainty that directly affected the planned schedule,” he said.
He added that the party’s inability to hold the ad-hoc ward and local government congresses slated for November 24 and 29—processes required to elect delegates for the primaries—made it impossible to move forward.
“These issues are currently before different courts across the country,” he noted.
Given the disruptions, Bisi said the party had no choice but to cancel the December 2 primary.
“In light of the foregoing, it has become inevitable, indeed unavoidable, that the PDP governorship primaries earlier scheduled for Tuesday, December 2, 2025, can no longer hold,” he announced.
The PDP has long struggled with internal divisions, and the latest crisis has intensified speculation that Governor Adeleke may defect to another party, though no clear indication has emerged about what his next political move might be.
