The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has suspended its governorship candidate, Mr. Jude Ezenwafor, over alleged sabotage and poor performance in the just-concluded November 8 gubernatorial election.
PDP Cites Sabotage and Non-Performance
Announcing the decision after its State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting in Awka on Tuesday, the PDP leadership said Ezenwafor’s suspension takes immediate effect and will last one month pending further investigation.
The state chairman of the PDP, Mr. Chidi Chidebe, said the decision followed the candidate’s “uncooperative and destructive attitude” throughout the campaign period.
“Ezenwafor failed to campaign in any ward, local government, or across the state. His actions sabotaged our collective interest,” Chidebe said.
He added that the candidate was found to have connived with opponents and created a parallel structure within the party to interfere unlawfully with legitimate PDP functions.
PDP’s Poor Election Performance
In the November 8 governorship election, the PDP recorded one of its worst electoral results in Anambra State, finishing fourth with 1,401 votes.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won the poll with 422,664 votes, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate came second with 99,445 votes. The Labour Party candidate placed third, polling 10,505 votes.
Ezenwafor, the PDP flagbearer, reportedly secured only one vote in his own ward — Nnobi Ward 3 in Idemili South Local Government Area — a result described by the SEC as “embarrassing and unacceptable.”
“This represents the worst result for PDP in any ward across the state and exposes his lack of commitment, credibility, and loyalty,” the PDP chairman said.
Disciplinary Action and Further Probe
Following deliberations, the PDP State Executive Committee resolved to suspend Ezenwafor and refer his case to the State Party Disciplinary Committee for further investigation and appropriate recommendations.
“The National Working Committee (NWC) has been notified and advised not to grant Ezenwafor or his collaborators any recognition as their actions were clearly aimed at destabilising the party,” Chidebe added.
PDP Rules Out Legal Challenge
Despite the poor showing at the polls, the PDP leadership stated it will not contest the election results in court, choosing instead to focus on rebuilding the party.
“We are determined to rebuild and reposition the PDP under the leadership of Ambassador Umar Damagum,” Chidebe said.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to discipline, unity, and internal democracy, pledging to restore the PDP’s image and electoral strength in Anambra State.
