The Portuguese Grand Prix is officially set to make its return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027 and will also feature again in 2028, marking a welcome revival for F1 fans in Portugal. The historic race will take place at the Algarve International Circuit near Portimao, a venue that previously hosted two memorable events during the Covid-19-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Portugal will effectively replace the Dutch Grand Prix, which is scheduled to be held at Zandvoort for the last time next year. The Algarve circuit, widely regarded as one of F1’s most technically challenging tracks, spans 2.89 miles of undulating terrain with dramatic elevation changes, providing a unique test for drivers and teams alike. Its sweeping corners and blind crests make for a thrilling spectacle, although its somewhat rural location north of the coast has occasionally caused accessibility issues for fans.
F1 chairman Stefano Domenicali expressed his enthusiasm for the announcement:
“I’m delighted to see Portimao return to the Formula 1 calendar and for the sport to continue to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase. The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats. The interest and demand to host a Formula 1 grand prix is the highest that it has ever been.”
The Algarve International Circuit has already produced memorable moments in F1 history. Lewis Hamilton won both previous Portuguese Grands Prix, including his 2020 victory that allowed him to surpass Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Grand Prix wins, making Hamilton the sport’s all-time leader in race victories. His 2021 triumph at Portimao saw him overtake both Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen in a thrilling battle, further cementing the circuit’s reputation as a track where overtaking and skill are rewarded.
The return of the Portuguese GP is expected to generate significant excitement among fans, with tickets likely in high demand for both the 2027 and 2028 events. For drivers, teams, and fans alike, Portimao offers a unique challenge that is rarely found elsewhere on the F1 calendar — a combination of technical complexity, natural beauty, and passionate spectators.
As Formula 1 continues to expand its global presence, the Algarve Grand Prix will add to the sport’s rich history and provide another key venue in the European leg of the championship, helping to maintain F1’s reputation as the pinnacle of motorsport.
