Power Outage Hits Katsina After Fire Destroys 15MVA Transformer

Parts of Katsina metropolis were left without electricity on Monday following a fire at the IBB Way Injection Substation.

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) confirmed that the blaze, which occurred late Sunday, January 4, 2026, involved a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at the facility. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, while technical teams have been dispatched to assess the damage.

Affected feeders were isolated as a precaution to safeguard lives and property. Several areas across the metropolis—including Kofar Kaura, Government Reserved Area (GRA), Dandagoro, parts of Kofar Marusa, Janbango, and Kano Road—experienced outages.

KEDCO apologised for the inconvenience and assured residents that restoration efforts are ongoing, emphasizing that safety remains the company’s top priority.

The incident comes just days after a nationwide blackout triggered by the collapse of the national grid, which left multiple regions across Nigeria in darkness.
