Paris Saint-Germain once again demonstrated their dominance in French football, overcoming fierce rivals Marseille in dramatic fashion to lift the French Super Cup for a fourth consecutive year. The Champions League holders required a last-gasp equaliser and a commanding penalty shootout performance to seal victory in the high-stakes clash played in Kuwait.
Early Control as PSG Looked in Command
The encounter, contested between the reigning Ligue 1 champions and Coupe de France winners PSG and last season’s league runners-up Marseille, appeared to be heading toward a routine Parisian triumph early on.
PSG took the lead through Ousmane Dembélé, whose early goal gave the Parisians control and reinforced their status as favourites. With their technical superiority and composure on the ball, PSG looked comfortable for long spells, dictating possession and limiting Marseille’s attacking opportunities.
Late Marseille Fightback Turns the Game on Its Head
However, Marseille refused to fold and produced a stunning late resurgence that transformed the match. Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood brought Marseille level from the penalty spot, calmly converting to reignite belief within his side.
Moments later, Marseille completed the turnaround when PSG defender Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving Marseille a shock lead and putting PSG on the brink of defeat.
Gonçalo Ramos Rescues PSG at the Death
Just when Marseille appeared poised to claim a famous victory, Gonçalo Ramos struck deep into stoppage time. The Portuguese striker showed remarkable composure to fire home a dramatic equaliser, sending the contest to a penalty shootout and breaking Marseille hearts.
The goal underlined PSG’s resilience and refusal to surrender, even when moments away from losing a major domestic trophy.
Chevalier the Hero in the Shootout
PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier proved decisive in the shootout, producing crucial saves from Matt O’Riley and Hamed Traoré to swing momentum firmly in PSG’s favour.
At the other end, PSG were flawless. Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes and Désiré Doué all converted their penalties with confidence, sealing a 4–1 shootout victory and sparking celebrations among the Parisian squad.
PSG Extend Their Super Cup Dominance
The triumph further cements PSG’s grip on the French Super Cup. The club are now record 14-time winners of the competition and have lifted the trophy 12 times in the last 13 years, underlining their sustained domestic dominance.
Having completed a domestic double last season by winning Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France, PSG entered the Super Cup as overwhelming favourites — and once again found a way to deliver, even under extreme pressure.
Marseille Fall Short Despite Brave Display
For Marseille, the defeat was heartbreaking. Their late goals showcased resilience and belief, but they ultimately fell short against a PSG side boasting superior depth, experience and nerve in decisive moments.
Despite the loss, Marseille’s performance — particularly their late comeback — will provide encouragement as they look to challenge PSG more consistently throughout the season.
