Rep Doguwa Urges House of Reps to Suspend Sessions Over Insecurity

Alhassan Doguwa, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency, on Tuesday called for a temporary suspension of parliamentary activities, citing escalating insecurity across the country.

Speaking during plenary, Doguwa criticised the handling of security under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, highlighting how fear and violence were disrupting everyday life.

“The country is running in blood and tears. Farmers cannot go to their farms, traders cannot go to markets, worshippers cannot go to mosques or churches,” he said, questioning the relevance of continuing legislative work amid widespread insecurity.

Doguwa urged the Speaker and lawmakers to take urgent action, proposing the suspension of House sessions until the government implements measures to protect lives and property. He described the move as a way to send a clear message about the seriousness of the security crisis.

He reminded members that the constitution places primary responsibility for security on the federal government while also holding state governments accountable. Doguwa noted that insecurity transcends religion, party, and ethnicity, affecting all constituencies, and warned that it could impact national activities, including elections.

Specifically, he mentioned rising kidnappings around the Falgore Game Reserve in his constituency, stressing that such incidents have become a daily concern for residents. He concluded by urging lawmakers to collaborate across regions and political divides to address the growing security threats.
