Reps Urge FG to Ensure Safe Return of Jonathan from Guinea-Bissau

The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to take urgent action to secure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is currently trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup.

Jonathan, one of 36 high-profile observers on a joint mission of the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), was in Guinea-Bissau to monitor the presidential election held on Sunday.

The motion, moved by the House Leader, urges the government to use all available diplomatic channels to bring Jonathan back safely. Addressing the House, the mover noted Jonathan’s extensive record in election observation across countries such as Zimbabwe, Liberia, Ghana, Mozambique, Pakistan, Tanzania, and South Africa, representing organizations including the African Union, the Commonwealth, and Nigeria.

He added, “Currently, he is trapped in Guinea-Bissau due to the coup. This is a matter of national importance. We urge the government to continue every effort to ensure his safe return immediately.”

Speaking in support, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) praised Jonathan’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic and socioeconomic development. He emphasized that while the safe return of a former president is vital, the government should equally prioritize the safety of all Nigerians, wherever they may be.

Chinda said, “Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is one of the best civilian presidents our country has had, serving with humility, vision, and democratic excellence. The government should ensure his safe return, and the same consideration should extend to all Nigerians abroad.”
