
Tens of residents of Oloka village in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, have abandoned their homes following the fatal attack on five forest rangers at the Old Oyo National Park.
The incident occurred late Tuesday night when suspected gunmen opened fire on the rangers, killing all five on duty. The park is situated within Oloka village, part of the Ogbomoso geopolitical zone.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the attack. Public Relations Officer Olayinka Ayanlade said that Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna had visited the scene and ordered the deployment of additional personnel to secure the area.
Despite assurances of increased security, many residents remain away from their homes. Observers reported that numerous houses are currently locked and deserted, with villagers expressing fear for their safety.
A resident, speaking anonymously, said:
“You know that they killed five people at the park. The village has been deserted since then. The assailants came around 10:00 pm on Tuesday, and many people left immediately. Many are yet to return.”
Residents have called on the government and security agencies to strengthen security measures, including the establishment of permanent security posts in and around Oloka village.
