The factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Dr. Robinson Ewoh, has explained why his group has aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ewoh accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of deceiving the PDP by claiming he could wrest political control of Rivers State from Wike, only to abandon the party midway into his tenure.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Ewoh said instead of pursuing reconciliation after the lifting of the state’s emergency rule, Fubara allegedly boasted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would force the State House of Assembly to pass budgets and compel Wike to support his re-election.
“The mandate Governor Fubara holds was given to him by the people of Rivers State, and his actions and inactions affect everyone. It is therefore incumbent on him to fully disclose all agreements he entered into in the peace deal brokered by the President before the emergency rule was lifted,” Ewoh said.
Tracing the crisis, Ewoh recalled that Fubara fell out with the Rivers State House of Assembly within his first year in office. The dispute culminated in the bombing of the Assembly complex and the intervention of President Tinubu, who brokered an initial peace pact.
According to Ewoh, Fubara misled party members into believing he could take political control from Wike. A second peace agreement was later brokered during the emergency rule, but it was neither documented nor disclosed, eventually leading to Fubara’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2025.
Ewoh criticized Fubara’s absence from the PDP National Convention in Ibadan in November 2025, despite supervising its preparations while still a PDP member. He also defended the constitution of the PDP Rivers State Caretaker Committee in December 2025, noting it was validly formed by the National Working Committee and supported by prominent party leaders including former National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus and former Governor Celestine Omehia.
Ewoh cited Wike’s recent “thank you” visits across Rivers State, during which the FCT Minister alleged that Fubara breached agreements made before the lifting of the emergency rule. These reportedly included commitments that Fubara would not seek a second term and would make specific administrative changes—conditions that Ewoh claims were ignored.
While noting that Fubara’s second-term ambitions are now an APC matter, Ewoh stressed the need for transparency, saying Rivers residents deserve full disclosure of all agreements to make informed decisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
He concluded by urging Fubara to publicly address Rivers people, Nigerians, and the international community on the details of the peace agreements brokered by President Tinubu.
