Zimbabwe Cricket has announced that former captain and all-rounder Sean Williams will no longer be considered for national selection after entering a rehabilitation program to address drug addiction. The 39-year-old veteran, who has been a cornerstone of Zimbabwean cricket, has effectively ended his international career.
Career Achievements
Sean Williams has been one of Zimbabwe’s most prolific players, amassing nearly 9,000 international runs and taking over 150 wickets across all three formats of the game. His contributions to Zimbabwe Cricket have spanned over two decades, earning him recognition both as a player and a leader.
Williams withdrew from Zimbabwe’s T20 squad ahead of the World Cup Africa Qualifier series in Harare in September. During an internal investigation into his withdrawal, Williams revealed that he had been struggling with drug addiction and had voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program.
Zimbabwe Cricket Statement
Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirmed that after careful consideration, Williams will not be selected for the national team again. The governing body emphasized the need for all contracted players to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and adherence to anti-doping regulations.
ZC highlighted that Williams had a history of disciplinary issues and repeated unavailability, which impacted team performance and preparations. While commending him for seeking rehabilitation, the association stated that withdrawal from team commitments under circumstances involving potential drug testing raised serious professional and ethical concerns.
ZC also noted that Williams’ national contract, which runs until 31 December 2025, will not be renewed. However, the board expressed sincere appreciation for his immense contribution to Zimbabwean cricket and wished him strength in his recovery and future endeavors.
Legacy
Despite the circumstances surrounding his departure, Williams leaves behind a lasting legacy. He has played a pivotal role in many of Zimbabwe’s significant cricketing moments and remains a respected figure in domestic and international cricket.
