Singapore Police have said they found no evidence of foul play in the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, contradicting the murder charges filed in Assam against seven individuals, including Garg’s brother.

In a statement posted on its official website, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that “based on preliminary investigations, the SPF does not suspect foul play”, urging the public to avoid speculation as investigations under the Coroners Act 2010 continue. The final findings will be submitted to the State Coroner within three months.

The SPF has already shared its preliminary findings and autopsy report with India’s High Commission in Singapore on October 1.

Meanwhile, in Assam, police are continuing their murder probe, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is expected to file its report by late November or early December, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. An Assam team will travel to Singapore on October 21 for consultations with SPF officials.

The controversy has triggered protests in Assam. On Wednesday, police had to resort to lathi-charge and warning shotsafter a mob attacked a convoy transporting five of the accused to Baksa District Jail, injuring several officers and two civilians.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited Garg’s cremation site and family on Friday, calling for a “transparent and quick investigation”.

Separately, the Assam government has set up a judicial inquiry commission led by Justice Soumitra Saikia to examine possible negligence or conspiracy related to Garg’s death. The commission will accept public statements between November 3 and 23.
