WASHINGTON — Global automaker Stellantis (STLAM.MI) announced on Tuesday a recall of approximately 375,000 plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee SUVs worldwide after receiving reports of battery-related fires. The company is urging owners to park their vehicles outdoors and avoid charging them until repairs are completed.
The recall affects 2020–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models. Stellantis said a repair solution is nearly ready, but as a precaution, vehicles should not be parked near buildings or other structures due to potential fire hazards.
According to documents submitted to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker has recorded 19 fires linked to the issue and one reported injury. Roughly 320,000 of the affected vehicles are located in the United States.
The defective battery packs were supplied by Samsung SDI (006400.KS). An internal investigation by Stellantis and Samsung SDI traced the latest fire to the same defect involved in the 2024 recall of 154,000 Jeep plug-in hybrids, which had resulted in two injuries. Vehicles repaired under that previous recall will now require another fix, according to NHTSA.
Stellantis reported nine fires in vehicles that had already received the 2024 software update and ten additional fires in models not included in that earlier recall. Samsung SDI said the likely root cause stems from separator damage combined with other complex chemical interactions within the battery cells.
This is the second major safety action by Stellantis in recent months. In October, the company also recalled more than 298,000 vehicles in the U.S. over a potential rollaway risk.
