Tesla Germany Sales Plunge Over 50% in October While EV Market Surges

Tesla’s (TSLA.O) sales in Germany fell sharply in October, dropping more than half compared with the same month last year, according to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Despite the decline in Tesla sales, overall battery electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Germany continued to grow.

Tesla Sales Decline
In October, Tesla sold just 750 vehicles in Germany, representing a 53.5% decrease year-on-year. From January to October 2025, Tesla’s cumulative sales fell 50.4% to 15,595 units compared with the same period last year, signaling ongoing challenges for the U.S. EV manufacturer in the European market.

EV Market Growth
By contrast, total new electric vehicle registrations in Germany increased 47.7% in October, reaching 52,425 units, highlighting strong demand for EVs despite Tesla’s decline.

Regional Challenges for Tesla in Europe
Tesla’s October sales slump was not limited to Germany. The company also reported significant drops in Spain, the Netherlands, and Nordic markets, underscoring continued difficulties in maintaining its market share across Europe.

BYD’s European Surge
Chinese EV manufacturer BYD (002594.SZ) saw a dramatic increase in German sales, with October registrations rising more than nine-fold year-on-year to 3,353 units. Year-to-date, BYD has sold 15,171 vehicles in Germany, reflecting growing European interest in Chinese EV brands.

Tesla’s declining European sales come amid increasing competition from both domestic and international EV manufacturers, as well as evolving market dynamics in the fast-growing electric vehicle sector.
