Nigerian superstar Wizkid has stirred debate after revealing that he had “no blueprint” when starting his music career, despite rising through ace singer Banky W’s record label.
The statement came in a snippet of his upcoming HBO documentary, Long Live Lagos, where the Ojuelegba singer said:
“There was no blueprint for me. I had to build a structure for myself.”
The comment quickly ignited discussions on social media, with some fans arguing that it downplayed Banky W’s role in his career and seemed dismissive of the pioneering Nigerian musicians who paved the way for the new generation of artists.
Elsewhere in the documentary, Wizkid credited legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti as a major influence on his musical journey.
“Fela Kuti was instrumental to why I believe I could really make music,” he stated.
Reactions on social media have been mixed:
- Franko_Nero wrote: “I remember the day Banky W announced he wanted to introduce a boy wonder. Today, this ungrateful child is claiming otherwise. If Banky knew, I’m sure he would have reconsidered.”
- Arhcent said: “He is erasing the role Banky W and EME played in his career. The person Banky picked from school is now saying ‘I had to build a structure for myself.’ God sees all.”
- Duke of Isoko added: “If he never built a structure, Banky probably wouldn’t have noticed him. He developed his own style, music, and fashion sense. But I get it—language sometimes complicates things here.”
- Sir Dickson offered a calmer perspective: “People are debating this with Banky’s impact in mind, but I think Wizkid meant his musical style. He reinvented himself. Wiz has never denied Banky’s influence, nor can he. Let’s calm down.”
