MINNEAPOLIS, MN – U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of a “day of reckoning and retribution” in Minnesota, days after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, sparking widespread outrage and protests.
Trump issued the statement on Truth Social Tuesday, linking the surge of federal immigration agents in the state to his administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants. He criticized former President Joe Biden’s immigration policies and framed the operation as a patriotic enforcement action.
“All the patriots of ICE want to do is remove them from your neighborhood and send them back to the prisons and mental institutions from where they came… FEAR NOT, GREAT PEOPLE OF MINNESOTA, THE DAY OF RECKONING & RETRIBUTION IS COMING!” – Donald Trump
The Department of Homeland Security echoed the phrase in a post on X (formerly Twitter), intensifying tensions in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
Federal Surge Sparks Legal Challenge
Minnesota’s Attorney General and the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul have filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging that the ICE surge violates state authority and residents’ rights, including freedom of speech.
“People are being racially profiled, harassed, terrorized, and assaulted… Schools have gone into lockdown. Businesses have been forced to close. Minnesota police are spending countless hours dealing with the chaos ICE is causing,” the AG said.
A federal judge was scheduled to hear arguments on Tuesday.
Ongoing Protests and Controversy
Protests have continued daily since Good’s death during an ICE enforcement operation. While the administration labeled Good a “domestic terrorist”, video evidence widely circulated online shows her attempting to flee in her vehicle when the agent opened fire.
Questions have also been raised over the investigation process, with local authorities criticizing the FBI for blocking an independent state body from participating. The UN Human Rights Council has called for a “prompt, independent, and transparent investigation” into the incident.
Broader Somali-American Impact
The Minnesota Somali-American community has been heavily affected. Prior to Good’s death, over 2,000 ICE agents had been deployed to the state amid allegations of fraud targeting the community.
On Wednesday, the Trump administration revoked Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia, forcing those previously protected to leave the U.S. by March 27. CAIR condemned the move as “the latest bigoted attack on the Somali community.”
