Dickson Iroegbu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused Nigeria’s leadership of playing politics in response to the military threat issued by US President Donald Trump.
Iroegbu made the remarks on Friday during an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST. He criticized the government’s narratives defending itself, saying they attempt to downplay the crisis by claiming that Muslims are also being killed.
“Many of us are disappointed with the Nigerian government’s counter-narratives, which claim that Muslims are also being killed in an effort to dispel accusations of Christian genocide. The crux of the matter is that Nigerians are being slaughtered in alarming numbers, and we cannot shy away from this fact. President Tinubu’s actions suggest a lack of empathy for the unwarranted deaths that have befallen the Nigerian people,” Iroegbu said.
His remarks follow Trump’s earlier statement that he had instructed the US Department of Defense to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria if the government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
DAILY POST reports that Trump had also designated Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ (CPC) over the alleged killings of Christians in the country.
