Residents of Okunran community in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State have reportedly fled their homes following a worsening security situation, leaving the once-busy town completely deserted.
A video obtained by SaharaReporters and recorded by local media outlet Egbe Mekun on Thursday shows empty streets, abandoned houses, and no visible human activity, painting the picture of a community turned into a ghost town.
The footage highlights the growing fear among residents as insecurity continues to spread across parts of the state, forcing families to seek safety elsewhere.
The development follows recent reports that suspected bandits released 17 additional worshippers abducted from the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu, also in Kogi State. The release reportedly came after prolonged negotiations and the payment of ransom.
Sources disclosed that the negotiations were coordinated by families of the victims and the Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu Development Association, with no involvement from the Kogi State Government.
The abduction occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, when armed men invaded the ECWA church during a religious gathering and kidnapped over 30 worshippers, triggering widespread panic and condemnation.
Since the incident, community leaders and relatives of the victims have remained engaged in difficult talks with the abductors to secure the release of those taken, amid growing concerns over persistent bandit attacks in the area.
