Waje Advocates Safer Online Culture at 6th Governors’ Spouses Conference

Award-winning Nigerian singer and humanitarian Waje participated in the 6th Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum Conference held in Abuja, emphasizing the role of public figures in promoting a safer and more respectful online environment.

The high-level gathering brought together governors’ wives, policymakers, development partners, and social advocates to address pressing national issues including women empowerment, healthcare, education, youth development, and social welfare.

Influencers as Agents of Change

Waje, a long-time advocate for women’s rights and youth development, highlighted the influence of societal figures in shaping cultural norms both online and offline. She stressed that beyond formal policy and programs, everyday behaviors—particularly those modelled by public figures—significantly affect societal attitudes.

“I truly believe male influencers and creators have more power than they sometimes realise. The first thing is what they normalise, the jokes they laugh at, the language they use, and what they allow in their comment sections. Silence can sometimes feel like endorsement,” she noted.

She further urged men to actively call out harmful behavior and amplify women’s voices, especially on issues of abuse, harassment, and inequality.

“A simple ‘this is not okay’ from a respected male voice can shift culture faster than a thousand debates. When men model respect online, it permits boys to do the same offline.”

Reinforcing the Conference’s Goals

Waje’s remarks underscored the broader theme of the conference: meaningful social transformation requires not only institutional leadership but also active, intentional influence from individuals with cultural reach.

Her call to action highlighted the importance of conscious online behavior as a catalyst for societal change and a tool for empowering women and youth across Nigeria.
