Actress Bimbo Akintola has opened up about her support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2023 elections, revealing that bullying played a key role in her decision to publicly endorse him.
In a recent interview on With Chude, Akintola explained that her support was partly a response to opposition supporters who criticized and bullied her over her choice of candidate.
The actress urged Nigerians to respect differing political opinions, emphasizing that everyone has the right to their own views. She also condemned the mistreatment of veteran actress Joke Silva, who faced harsh criticism for backing Tinubu.
Akintola said, “I supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last election because somebody annoyed me with their bullying. Nigerians are annoying. Don’t bully other people. We all have the right to our opinions. You don’t like this man [Tinubu], that’s fine. You prefer someone else, that’s good. But don’t bully others.”
She added, “They bullied Aunty Joke to the point that someone wrote something inhumane. So, I made a video and said, ‘I’m also supporting Tinubu. Kill me; let’s see if you can change my mind.’”
Akintola concluded, “We need to stop bullying. We need to accept that we will not always agree with everyone. That’s what makes life interesting. You might not agree tomorrow that he was the best person for the job, but at that moment, he was who I wanted, who I voted for. My voice is mine, and you cannot take it away from me.”
